Meet Dr. Gemmill
Ross Gemmill, DDS attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in foreign languages and engineering. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army and branched into the Medical Service Corps. Selected for flight school, he became a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot, specializing in aeromedical evacuation (MEDEVAC). During his 2011 deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Dr. Gemmill flew over 150 combat rescue missions, saving countless lives. These experiences ignited his profound interest in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as he witnessed firsthand the critical role of surgeons in treating battlefield trauma and restoring health.
After successfully commanding a MEDEVAC Company and achieving his military career goals, Dr. Gemmill transitioned to pursue a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He earned his dental degree from the University of Minnesota, where he graduated as Valedictorian. He then completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), a premier program renowned for its exceptional training in the specialty.
Dr. Gemmill is a compassionate and meticulous surgeon who prioritizes patient safety above all else. While his initial inspiration stemmed from facial trauma, he has since developed a special interest in other areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including anesthesia, wisdom tooth and dental extractions, pre-prosthetic surgery, bone grafting, implant surgery, and corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, and the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Gemmill is also actively working towards achieving Diplomate status with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He holds full privileges at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Dr. Gemmill’s career took him all over the country- living in New York, Alabama, Alaska, Texas and Minnesota, before finally settling in Virginia, where he and his family are thrilled to call home. Outside of work, Dr. Gemmill enjoys hiking, camping, hunting, skiing (on both water and snow), traveling, and spending time with his wife, Jessi, and their two sons.
