Socket Preservation Procedure

Preserving Your Jaw Bone after Extraction

Removal of teeth is sometimes necessary because of pain, infection, bone loss, or due to a fracture in the tooth. The bone that holds the tooth in place (the socket) is often damaged by disease and/or infection, resulting in a deformity of the jaw after the tooth is extracted. In addition, when teeth are extracted the surrounding bone and gums can shrink and recede very quickly, resulting in unsightly defects and a collapse of the lips and cheeks.

These jaw defects can create major problems in performing restorative dentistry whether your treatment involves dental implants, bridges, or dentures. Jaw deformities from tooth removal can be prevented and repaired by a procedure called socket preservation. Socket preservation can greatly improve your smile’s appearance and increase your chances for successful dental implants.

Several techniques can be used to preserve the bone and minimize bone loss after an extraction. In one common method, the tooth is removed and the socket is filled with bone or bone substitute. It is then covered with gum, artificial membrane, or tissue, which encourages your body’s natural ability to repair the socket. With this method, the socket heals, eliminating shrinkage and collapse of the surrounding gum and facial tissues. The newly formed bone in the socket also provides a foundation for an implant to replace the tooth. If your dentist has recommended tooth removal, be sure to ask if socket preservation is necessary. This is particularly important if you are planning on replacing the front teeth.

I was surprised and impressed by how helpful, friendly, and efficient everyone was. Of course I was nervous, and the entire staff was so reassuring. Dr. Conner's informality and clear explanations helped put me at ease. First he explained what he was going to do, and he kept explaining as he was doing it. I like knowing what's going on, so that was fantastic. Plus he made me laugh, which is not easy when your mouth is numb and open. I may have rolled my eyes. CVOFS made a difficult experience manageable and definitely easier than I thought it would be be.

My 8yo daughter had an impacted baby tooth extracted by Dr Tricker and it was an extremely positive experience. During our initial consultation, Dr Tricker explained what would happen during the procedure in a way that made my daughter feel much less anxious, even though she was to be put under anesthesia. The extraction went very smoothly due to Dr Tricker and his team's professional and calm manner. When I asked my daughter later if she was relieved it was all over, she said, "No, why? I liked it!"

After cracking a wisdom tooth I decided to go through with a root canal and crown at first. I thought about it and read testimonials on the internet. Most people seem to say if they could do it over again, they'd just have the tooth extracted. So I cancelled the "Endo" appointment and got a referral to CVOFS from my Dentist Dr. Leo Scholl. Overall, I was very pleased with my treatment by the front desk, Dr. Peter Eisenhardt, his staff especially Joyce. I hope y'all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !

I was very anxious when I first arrived at this office for the needed procedure--I was put at ease immediately by the friendliness, the attitudes, the concern shown me and my wife by the entire staff of this office. The office staff made sure we understood all of the financial obligations that were ours and the reasons for each. The attending nurse made sure I understood all of the procedure as well as the Dr. that took care of me. I was very impressed with everyone at this office and hopefully will not have to have this type of work performed again, but will make sure it would be here. I cannot say enough about my care which was outstanding.

From the very first encounter with the staff at CVOFS I felt an immediate confidence in their professionalism. I was greeted and given all the necessary paperwork and information for my visit. The process followed a streamlined and logical path. First a scan of my mouth, then a consultation with Dr. Tricker. The three dimensional scans were displayed a large monitor so Dr. Tricker could manipulate the image and enhance aspects of it to include the future work. He walked me through his diagnosis and recommendations without any pressure. He took his time to explain a plan of action that was in my best interest health wise as well as financially. Speaking of the cost. Wow! The staff emailed an estimate that had everything broken down to include my insurance and out of pocket expenses. This was wonderful seeing everything so clearly in a spreadsheet. This calmed my wallet as well as my mind. The procedure was beautifully done by Dr. Tricker and his assistants. He was very concerned with my comfort throughout the procedure. I can tell you, having work done in my mouth for over forty years, this was the most comfortable I have ever been, pain free! His instructions for at home care was very clear and easy. Kudos Dr. Tricker and all your support staff for a job well done.
